Welcome to Magica, a land where magic prospers!!! The world of magic! This is the kingdom where you can find magic everyday! This is the kingdom where magical beings coexist with non-magical beings! This is the kingdom where magical adventures are endless and told over and over again! This is…
Huh? Sorry? You said I’m rambling? But this little tour needs a bit grand introduction… Okay, okay, let’s move on then.
I’m Sylvanna Aldaine, the best reporter and journalist in the kingdom. Today, I will be your humble guide to introduce you to the only and the most popular magic school in this country: Magica Academy! Be my honoured guests! Can you see the largest circular building in the north of the capital city, almost the same size as the Jupiter, the royal palace of the king? Yup! That is our pride, Magica Academy.
But, before we step further into the academy, I want to give you a brief introduction about its establishment. Magica Academy was built due courtesy of King Stephanus VII of Magica. He was the first king to announce the end of living in hiding for all mages in the kingdom after the crown prince was saved by a magician. At first, it was not easy for both sides to live together, but that happened so long ago and the detail is so boring so I will not elaborate further. The most important thing is that after hundred years, right now, we live in harmony. So, let’s forget the past and move on!
Magica Academy and the community surrounding it always develops. Each time, the academy will send its instructors to all parts of the kingdom to find the new mages and bring them back to be trained into powerful mages who can live in harmony with their fellow mages and common people and use their magic power for good deeds. What? What? You want to ask a question?
You want to enrol at the academy? Well, I’m afraid that since it is a magic school, you cannot study here except if you have magical power inside you. And now you ask me how to be a mage? I’m sorry to disappoint you, but mages are people who were born with magical powers. If you are not born with magic inside you, you are not a mage. But, don’t worry. The Mistress, that’s our headmaster, has opened an opportunity for common people. Though, we can’t guarantee that you will be able to do magic after learning it for some times. Even if you are lucky enough, you will end up at the Purple Dormitory, at the most.
Well, you want to know about the Purple Dormitory? Be patient. We will get to that, soon. Here, take a look at the map of the first floor of Magica Academy.
Huh? Why it looks like a pentagram? Well, though it looks circular outside, the building is actually a large pentagram. Pentagram is the symbol of magic, after all. So, I guess that is the reason why the architect – I heard he was a white mage- designed it that way. I will explain all the rooms one by one. Let us move on to the hall.
Okay. Here it is. The Hall. This is the main entrance to the academy. This is the only and the last room in the academy anybody can enter freely. If you want to go any further, you need to have the permission. Two mages will be assigned in rotation as the receptionist, so there you go when you want to ask for permission. You know what else a receptionist does, right? I guess I do not need to explain their basic duties. I will tell you their special duties instead.
You see those large boards at each side of the hall? They are our billboards. We call the right billboard “the request board”. This is the board where all requests from all over the country -even from other countries, though it is so rare- are put on. Let us see one closely. Here. Every request has similar format. The first one is the objective. The objective of this one is “Clean Off Stinger Bugs”. You see the little square next to the object? Yes, it is green. It means the request can only be taken by the Green Mage since only a Green Mage has the ability to finish the request. Under the objective is an image, if necessary. Then, the location of the request. The last one, and it is the most important part, is the payment we can get after we finish the request.
What? Why people should pay us when asking for our help? You find the idea gruesome? You think we should use our magic to help common people freely? Well, I’ll tell you something: WE’RE MORTAL, TOO! We need to eat. We need to survive. Being a mage is like a profession here. We provide our service for common people who need magical help. They will come and process their request together with the receptionists. We never demand or set the price. We will let them decide how much they want to pay. If they do not have money at all and offer things such as food, artifact or any others, we will understand. So, the payment is not always in the form of money. BUT, of course, if the request is given by some influential people and it is a dangerous one, we will ask higher price.
The thing is, though this academy looks grand and luxurious, mages are not always wealthy people. There are some of us who come from respected and wealthy families, but there are some of us who are orphans or poor. The academy is funded by the kingdom, of course, but the fund is used for the operational needs of the school. The pocket money given to us is not enough to last us for a month. We need to take the requests and earn our money. Do you still want to be a mage after knowing that?
Okay. I like your spirit. Now, let us see the left billboard. When the right billboard is specifically made for posting the requests from outside people for inside people, the left billboard is specifically made for posting our requests. Yup. We need something like this, too. Just think about it. It’s not that all the problems out there can be divided equally to each kind of magic. Sometimes, people only request for Red Mages. Sometimes, there is no request at all for Purple Mages. Sigh. If we only rely on the request board, we will starve to death. So, we create another billboard to help those who rarely get request. Hey, what are you looking at? I’m not included! I’m special!
Anyway, besides advertisements, we also post the publication of our magazines or journals here. If we hold a party or festival, either for mages only or public, we will post it here, too. Any activities we have, we will share them on this billboard. Any changes of class, we will post them here, too. Any announcements, warnings, news, anything unrelated to requests, you can find them in this left billboard. So, it will not be wise for any mage to look only at the request board. You have to look at both billboards, okay? Remember that!
So, we move forward to the center of the building. Some mages call this central part, along with the central part of the second floor, as the “Corridors of Thousand Doors”. That’s a hyperbole! It doesn’t mean that the corridors actually have magical thousand doors leading to thousand different places even if there only fifteen doors here. Huh? You notice that? Your math skill is good. You will be a great mage in Purple Dorm, you know. Well, okay. Fifteen doors. Ten freaking tall doors and five elevator doors in the central part of the building, forming a pentagon.
There, behind the elevators, we have a pentagon water fountain. Why? You notice that there are so many coins at the bottom? Well, I don’t know who starting the ridiculous idea that you can toss a coin into the fountain and make a wish. Some mages admit that their wishes come true, but, up to day, it is still unclear whether the fountain can actually grant you your wishes.
We have passed the first door leading to the hall behind us. Now, I will explain the other rooms from here. Yes. You right me correctly. From here. You cannot enter the rooms without permission. You are lucky I let you in this far. Hey! Don’t be so grumpy. I’m the best reporter and journalist here. I will describe each room inside Magica Academy with an enthralling way that you will find it a lot better than truly walking inside each room.
Here we are, in the haven of mages. Even the strongest mage need a private place to sleep and rest. Here, each mage is given a room to be decorated as free as you want. A room of your own. It is said that you can tell someone’s nature by looking at how she or he arranges or decorates her or his room. It is not totally wrong. Expect to find icy furniture on the rooms of Ice Mages. Expect to find a garden full with flowers in the room of Green Mages.
Before further explanation of each dorm, I will tell you brief information regarding the admission of new mages. As I have told you before, our instructors will go to all over the land to find new potential mages. The new mages will be trained and tested for a year to determine their magical nature. After that, they will be given a room in one of five dormitories in the first floor. We mages are categorized based on our magical nature. There are five different kinds of magical power which are symbolized with color: Red, Blue, Green, White, and Purple.
Aside from the differences made by each mage, all dormitories have similar layout. There is one common room in each dormitory, at the very front. Here, you can enjoy time together with other mages sharing the dorm or even mages from other dorms. The common room leads to boys’ rooms and girls’ room, and the closest room to the common room, aka the first room, will be occupied by the leader of the dorm. It means that every dorm has two leaders, a boy and a girl.
Red is a color of destruction. Therefore, a destructive magic will be categorized into Red Magic. Honestly, Red Dorm is not my favorite one, and maybe will not be your favorite as well. (Psst. Don’t let them know this!) It’s not that they are brute or something. No. It’s just that their magic is so destructive that no furniture will remain intact in two weeks. No. I think I will only give three days at the most. The Red Dorm is known as the only dorm most frequently replacing its furniture in Magica Academy. Any small fight will lead to chaos. So, I advise you not to look for trouble with Red Mages when there are things around.
In the other hand, defensive magic will be categorized into Blue Magic. Actually, the difference between Red and Blue is rather vague. For example, a Fire Mage can be categorized as Red Mage or Blue Mage, depending on his/her tendency in using the element. If it is so powerful and has a wide radius of attack, it is Red Magic. If it is not and the wielder tends to use it for defensive measures, it is Blue Magic. So, basically, it depends on the wielder. Therefore, Blue Mages are often powerful mages with calmer demeanor. It is so rare to have blue mages picking up a fight with other mages. I do not imply that red mages are always looking for trouble, okay? Don’t misunderstand!
White Magic is healing magic. Any enhancement magic also belongs to White Magic. White Mages are the doctors and the nurses of mages. The cleanest dorm ever? Obviously White Dorm! However, healing magic is so rare. Therefore, they are far less in number than other dormitories. Except for one. But I will tell you when we’ve reached the second floor.
Green Magic is any magic associated with Mother Nature, mostly animals and plants. No wonder that Green Dorm always be the winner for the competition of “The Most Beautiful Dorm” in Magica Academy. The Green Dorm is more like a garden or rather than a dorm. It stays true to its color. Expect to see green everywhere inside the dorm!
Hmm? Oh, right. I promise to tell you about Purple Mages. Here we go. To the most bothersome dorm in Magica. Don’t get me wrong. It doesn’t mean that we Purple Mages are brute like Red Mages. Oops. Did I just say that? Forget it, immediately! We call it bothersome since Purple Magic is too vast to be categorized like Red Magic is destructive or Blue Magic is defensive. If you truly pay attention to everything I’ve said, you will remember that even there are mages in Magica Academy who were not born with magical power. They are Purple Mages.
People who love to learn magic but do not have magic in their blood mostly end up in Purple Dorm. Puzzles, codes, spell, incantation, fortune-telling, astrology, and many others related to magic, they are the specialization of Purple Dorm. In a way, many brilliant and smart mages come from our dorm. (If you dare call us geek like Red Mages often call us, I will kill you). We are responsible for the technological development of magic in Magica. Without us, the mages will be stuck in Stone Age forever. Ahem. I’m being subjective. Don’t mind me.
Hey, I can see so many wrinkles formed in your forehead. There are so many things you want to ask about the classification of magic here, aren’t there? Unfortunately, I do not have time to explain them all thoroughly. And I’m not the leader of the dorm or the instructor, so I cannot explain it very well. You have to find it out by yourself later. For now, let us move on to the next room.
Ahhh. This is the most favorite place of Red Mages in the dorm. I’m sure you can imagine what lies there after I’m saying that. Though training center is, in a sense, a special territory of Red Mages, we more often stumble upon Brown Mages rather than Red Mages inside. Eh? Brown Mages? I haven’t told you about them, have I? Be patient. I will definitely explain about them later, after I finish explain all the rooms in the first floor. Just be patient, okay?
This is the ground for us to train our magic. It is a forest. Yup! A forest with several clearings. Many magical animals and plants (preferably the carnivorous) are released here to help us train in a live situation. A Brown Mage is forbidden to enter the training center without supervision of an instructor or other mages, preferably Red or Green Mages, because the animals are the properties of Green Mages.
Though it is a ‘training’ center, it doesn’t mean you can take it easy and underestimate whatever lurks inside. Technically, it is the most dangerous area in Magica Academy, and if you do not follow the rules, you might lose your life. Besides the rule to bring a supervisor along when you using this ground, there is other important rules you must obey in this ground. First, you cannot kill any animals or plants here, but you can subdue them. Second, you are forbidden to enter the training center at night. You are free to use it at day, but the place is off limit at night. Do not ask why!
